Charitable Contributions

How we Fund Charitable Giving

Our club funds charitable contributions through a variety of fundraising activities, annual membership dues, and donations made by our individual members. Contributions or fundraising proceeds are entirely (100%) donated to worthy causes.

This is unusual, as most charities have administrative costs of 5-20%.  Unlike other charitable organizations, all of our administrative expenses are covered by annual membership dues, so every dollar donated goes entirely to charitable endeavors.

We annually raise additional funds for the Rotary International Foundation and the Gundaker Foundation through the generous individual donations of our members.  In the Rotary tradition, donations to these funds are given entirely to charity, all administrative expenses are covered by short term investments.  Note that the club's direct membership donations are not included in figures noted below.

How We Make Charitable Contributions

Charitable organizations who receive funding from the Rotary Club of Jenkintown submit an application to our Budget & Finance Committee.  We only make awards to certified nonprofit organizations, which must reapply annually for continued funding.

Each organization soliciting or being awarded funds is expected to make a twenty minute presentation to our club as part of the consideration process.  Organizations funded for more than one year make a presentation on an annual basis thereafter.

Our Budget & Finance Committee ensures the worthiness and suitability of each applicant, allocates funds to further the long-term goals of our club, reviews reports of how the funds were used, and monitors disbursements.

Our Board of Directors reviews committee recommendations and makes all final decisions on which applicants are funded and in what amount.  Funding for an individual organization may vary from year to year, as our budget or goals change to meet varying circumstances.

Where Our Club Contributed

Contributions for prior fiscal years are available for review by clicking the navigation buttons on the top left of this page.  During the prior fiscal year (July 2007 - June 2008) the Rotary Club of Jenkintown made charitable contributions totaling $19,000.  Final allocations for charitable contributions are made at fiscal year end, and dependant on the success of fund raising activity during the fiscal year. Our final annual giving allocation for the current fiscal year (and the annual giving budget for the subsequent fiscal year) is approved by our Board of Directors in June of each year.

The following regulation is taken from the Rotary International Code of Policies

Policy Code Item 9.010. Club Finances

At the beginning of each fiscal year the club’s board of directors shall prepare or cause to be prepared a budget of estimated income and estimated expenditures for the year, which, having been agreed to by the board, shall stand as the limit of expenditures for the respective purposes unless otherwise ordered by action of the board. All bills shall be paid by the treasurer, or other authorized officer, only after approval by two other officers or directors. An independent review by a qualified accountant or other qualified person shall be made once each year of all the club’s financial transactions.

Budgeted Expenditures for the current fiscal year have not been made available for publication, although this has been our customary practice since 2002.  We anticipate this information will be available in the Fall of 2008.
