About
our annual Citrus Fruit Drive
The
Rotary Club of Jenkintown uses citrus fruit sales as a
fund raising tool. Every dollar used to purchase
citrus fruit through our club goes entirely and directly
to charity.
As
a direct result of a variety of fund raising efforts
(like citrus fruit sales) the Rotary Club of Jenkintown
gave $23,250 to
local charitable and non-profit organizations
during the fiscal year ending in June 2006 . In
addition, our members donated an additional $5,650 of
their personal funds to international and local
charitable causes. Last year we raised over $13,000 for charity from sales of Florida citrus
fruit.
But this is no ordinary citrus fruit
...
Starting
in the late Fall of each year we custom order citrus
fruit directly from the finest citrus groves in
Florida. Our order is custom picked, quickly
packaged, and loaded onto a refrigerated truck.
The truck arrives in Jenkintown barely two days after
picking and is available for sale to the general public by the box.
This is the best way to enjoy the freshest citrus fruit
available anywhere - and only the Rotary Club of
Jenkintown offers this service to the general
public.
People
tell us that fruit this fresh has a unique flavor and
texture that has to be experienced to be understood. It is
that special, but (as you will see by scrolling
down to review pricing information) it is also a
fabulous bargain!

Why
our Citrus Fruit is Special
The
Rotary Club of Jenkintown sells Fresh Florida citrus
from "The World's Best Citrus Company" (H and S Citrus, Inc.)
H
& S Citrus is a family owned and operated business.
They pick from trees that are at least 11 years old and
then, only the fruit on those trees that is truly mature.
The rest is left for later harvesting, when it has had
additional time to let Mother Nature take her course and
it has completely ripened
The quality of citrus fruit is determined by the ratio
between the sugar content and acidity. H & S
repeatedly tests the fruit for this ratio, while it is in
its growing stages. When it has reached the optimum
balance, when the fruit is at its peak, then it is
harvested.
While other packers may get their fruit from the same
areas -- even the same groves as H & S Citrus, no
other fruit packer matches this step by step, proven
"plan for taste and freshness". Every aspect of
the H & S Citrus operation (from harvesting to
machinery to personnel and scheduling to transportation) is set up with one single goal in mind and that is to
provide customers the most nutritious, sweetest, tastiest
fruit available.
Once it has passed as "H & S quality" the
fruit is washed and coated with a layer of safe, US FDA
approved, water-soluble wax - which enhances the appearance and protects its
freshness. (This wax is easily removed by rinsing with tap water.)
