Rotary
Centennial Pancake Roundup to complete the Jenkintown Town Square (April
16, 2005)
In 2005 Rotary clubs throughout the world are
celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of Rotary International by
undertaking special projects to improve their local communities. The
Rotary Club of Jenkintown is also working on a special project for our community
to mark this Centennial milestone.
We have accepted the challenge of completing the
"Jenkintown Town Square". This park and gathering area in the heart of
town was envisioned as a beautiful, peaceful park setting ... intended as an
escape from the cold concrete and macadam of urban mayhem. The Town Square
was constructed several years ago, but funding limitations prevented finishing
the landscaping according to the original plan. Instead, less expensive
plantings were installed with disappointing results. Inappropriate
plantings have not thrived or missed suitable maintenance care. The
absence of suitable plantings for the site and straying from the original
landscape architect's plan has detracted from the Town Square's
appearance.
To
raise the funds for this community park renovation, we sponsored a Complete Pancake
Breakfast along with eggs, sausages and beverages on
April
16, 2005 at the Grace Presbyterian Church (at Old York and Vista Roads in
Jenkintown), from 7:30 AM to Noon. Breakfast tickets were $7.00 for adults and
$5.00 for children under 6, and could be purchased in advance at the Church
office, at Bryner Chevrolet, or at the door.

The menu included: pancakes, scrambled eggs,
breakfast sausages, toast, and a variety of beverages. Service was buffet
style, but all food was be prepared on site by a professional
chef, and our club members working under the chef's supervision.
We've named our fundraiser the "PANCAKE
ROUNDUP FOR THE TOWN SQUARE". We invited you, your friends,
and your family to attend. Over 225 people attended in support of our effort to improve the Town
Square and to enhance the historic Jenkintown retail area.
We also
asked local businesses to sponsor the event by donations .This
project was not be built by pancakes alone. Donations of $100 to $350
received special publicity in newspaper ads and at the breakfast itself.
Gift certificates from sponsoring businesses were also accepted for
inclusion in an "on the spot" raffle. During the breakfast
numerous gift baskets with wonderful prizes and food were raffled off.
We enjoyed hosting our delicious
breakfast, served by members of the Rotary Club of Jenkintown - local
business and professional people following our motto "service
above self" by volunteering to serve our community.
