Our State- of- the- Art Web Hosting Service

Our web site resides in servers of a web hosting service which provides an unusually fast, reliable hosting platform for this web site. Our web hosting service (Purehost) uses  a highly redundant, carrier-class architecture, supported by Dell PowerEdge servers and Cisco 6509 enterprise-class switches. Cisco ArrowPoint load balancers and multiple network connections deliver outstanding performance and reliability. A Cisco Pix Firewall and regular security audits by external system experts ensure a secure, stable environment. The web hosting service also utilizes NetApp storage clusters, such as those used by Yahoo, Texas Instruments and Merrill Lynch, which store each file in at least two different locations to ensure reliability.

Our Web Hosting Service  has been delivering shared web hosting services for over eleven years. It currently delivers hosting to more than 80,000 customers through a number of different web sites, and has an impressive 99.985% uptime each year.

Web Site Costs

The costs of providing information about our club and club activities is modest, particularly compared to the expenses of printed educational or marketing materials and postage. Retention of exclusive world-wide rights to the website internet domain name (www.JenkintownRotary.Org) for the five year period from January 2004 to January 2009 entailed a $110 expenditure in December 2003. The registration was renewed for another five year term (January 2009 to January 2014) in September 2008 for just $98.92.  The cost of annual web hosting service contract (12 months of web hosting service and support for $219) is renewed every May. Annual renewal of the web hosting contract for each twelve month period was made a standard club expenditure as a line item in our annual budget by  a majority vote by the Board of Directors in April 2008.

The webmaster job typically requires between one and four hours each week to keep the site current and running. Periodically more time is required for major changes to the site, resolving software problems, or larger updates. Both programming & design labor, software, hardware, computer time, supplies, and associated miscellaneous costs are donated to the club. Therefore, there are no other associated monetary expenditures.

Web Site Usage

Utilization of our club website is monitored on a weekly basis.  The method and results of recent monitoring is available on the web site.  The methods used to track web site use are presented, with explanations, on the web page entitled Web Site Tacking Methods.  The data resulting from analysis of our web site traffic is presented on the web page entitled Web Site Usage & Visitor Statistics.  Information about web activity is gathered in aggregate only.  Our club does not and can not track the activity of individual users.  Available data suggests that: 

Our web site continues to be well used, and traffic has increased annually since website inception in 2001. In the most recent tracking period (January 2007 - December 2007) an average of 40 different visitors access this website each day. During this period we had over 14,153 visits and 90,897 hits to the site (an increase from 1,455 visits or 26,227 hits over the prior year).
